Every bedroom DJ knows the struggle of getting booked to play at clubs and venues. There are only so many DMs you can slide into and mixes you can send out. Eventually, you’ve got to take matters into your own hands.

That’s exactly what Mika, our 25-year-old ambassador from just outside Cologne, decided to do. Better known in the local scene as JACUZI, went from bedroom DJ to underground party host through DIY initiative. No waiting for permission. No accepting the gatekeepers' timeline. Our hard techno selector started hauling his Soundboks to random fields around his hometown and throwing outdoor raves.

When we saw footage of the HYPERRAVE resident on social media, we had to get to know the brains behind these raves. So, we caught up with JACUZI between sets to find out what made him turn fields into dancefloors and why waiting for permission was never part of the plan.

What inspired you to start doing your thing?

I’ve always looked up to popular DJs. To me, it’s fascinating how one person can influence the emotions and movements of an entire crowd just by weaving different tracks together in a set.

I also loved sharing the new music I discovered on Soundcloud with my friends at every house party. One night, a friend told me, “Hey Mika, you really have to start DJing.” So, I thought, okay, let’s learn this.

As a small, unknown DJ, it’s tough to get booked in clubs. That’s why I started hosting my own mini raves with my Soundboks in random fields both to gain experience playing for people and, of course, to have fun.

What is your role at the party?

At parties, I’m usually the one who brings people together through a shared love of music. I’m also the kind of person who’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time—always moving around because I want to talk to everyone who’s there.

What are your non-negotiables for partying?

No wallflowers: the kitchen is not a hiding place, it’s the secondary dance floor.

Cheers rule: you can’t sip before clinking at least one glass or do eye contact haha.

What makes a party go from good to legendary?

One of the biggest aspects of every legendary party is that rare combination of perfect weather, a perfect number of drinks, and high energy from your best friends and everyone there.

What is your favorite party memory?

Me and my friends once hosted a pre party on a festival camp under a Sunsail while it was raining. We started with 10 people and one hour later the party grew to 50 people dancing to a random set on Soundcloud.

I was in a quite emotional state because after the festival I left my home for 5 months and this was the best time I could spend with my friends before leaving.

Why are Soundboks and Lightboks perfect for your kind of partying?

It is too easy to set everything up. SOUNDBOKS just changed the game with bringing the loudest portable speaker to the market which lasts sooo long. Personally I really like the sturdy design. In my opinion you just can’t break a SOUNDBOKS. This is why I really love to work with these products. Simple, easy to use, and sets up in no time.

What is your favorite song to listen to on a Soundboks?

Ouuh that’s a tough one. Currently it might be PROJEKT PATRICK from CANUMABOYS.
